Choose Web Hosting Carefully

by Howard Brule

There are countless sites on the Internet, spread among millions of different domains. Isn’t it time you had one, too? Every day, more people are setting up an online footprint by signing up with a web hosting company. Regardless of what you plan to do with your site, it’s a great time to join the millions online.

There are many reasons to start a site online, and you are probably familiar with most of them. Profit is one of the largest reasons as many current successful online business owners will tell you. Another motivating factor is the ability to easily share knowledge with a wide audience.

Some people just want a personal site to tell the world about themselves and their lives. No matter what your motives, you can make a site that suits you.

With the proliferation of sites out there, a huge industry has naturally grown for web hosting. There are literally thousands of hosts you can choose from: some well known, others less known. Just because a site is obscure, however, does not mean it is bad. On the flip side, not all of the well known hosts are suited to everybody.

Some things that you will want to take note of when searching for a hosting service are their price and their limitations. Many hosting services will have a limited amount of space or bandwidth that your site can utilize. This isn’t much of a problem for smaller sites, but limitations like these can have a signficant impact on larger enterprises, who will generally opt for sites with large or unlimited amounts of space of bandwidth.

These types of considerations affect the cost. While there are many companies that offer cheap hosting, some are better than others and you often do get what you pay for. Spending a few dollars more can make a difference in finding a quality web host.

When choosing a web hosting service, read the fine print! Most hosting companies are up front with their policies, but a few unscrupulous services will bury hidden fees or technicalities in their privacy policy or terms of service. Don’t let this happen to you. Read everything you can about a company before entrusting your money and personal information to it.

There are hosting alternatives available to anyone who is not interested in a full web hosting service. One way to work is through a blogging site, which is particularly beneficial for personal sites, and are free and take much less time and information than standard hosting services.

Many social networking sites also offer the possibility of creating a personal page on the net. You can use these different options as a means of making your mark on the internet.

But these free spaces are usually meant only for personal purposes. When it comes time to create an online identity for a company or create a site that you expect to actually have some traffic, there is no substitue for a website hosted with a legitimate web hosting service.

The price of web hosting services isn’t always a good indicator of quality, as you will learn after some research. Sometimes inexpensive web hosting services can be very high in quality, so you really need to do your homework.

Ways to Profit from Web Hosting

by Matt Hedges

Web hosting is a vital business that many companies embark on world-wide and enjoy a good profit from. There are many ways for a web hosting company to expand its operations and create even more income from their one single business. Web hosting itself requires some investment in equipment and space. Once that is acquired it makes sense to make the best use of it possible to generate as much income as the potential for it allows. Various ways to earn extra income are actively sought out in this very competitive industry.

The opportunities are wide-spread for the web host that has the provisions available to create them. These services increase income and create improved relationships with their customers as well.

The list below includes just a few of the ways web hosts can make additional income.

Extra Ways to Earn Money with a Web Hosting Service

Reseller Web Hosting: This is an excellent method of earning money without much effort. The web host can purchase a web hosting package at a reasonable amount and resell it to for a larger price. Web masters and web hosts are making large amounts by applying this technique. This has been known to make the web master’s richer overnight. However, this is not easy as it sounds to be. The web host needs to make the initial investments and would get the return only after reselling the server space. A small amount of space, exclusively for a small business won’t suffice. The web host needs to have ample space purchased in order to begin such a business. After the web host has acquired huge server space and bandwidth, he/she can distribute it to other users in proportions. Each of the customers of his server space would provide him some charge on monthly basis and hence the process would go on.

The reseller earns money in much the same way as the original host. Monthly fees from their customers are pocketed by the seller. Since they have the original host providing things like IT and equipment they are free from that expense. Their income comes from the clients that purchase the service and setting up those accounts for them with the ‘hidden’ original provider. A reseller is usually offered space by the origin host at a discount that is often as much as 10%. The reseller’s profits depend upon the size of the space offered and the bandwidth allowed.

This is an advantageous position to be in as the reseller does not have to provide for assistance and support in their packages. With the development of this industry, and the heavy competition developing some resellers are beginning to realize the need to offer these services however, in order to remain competitive. Reselling has a low overhead since it can be operated largely from home. All that is needed is the initial investment of origin host space. Some reseller companies grow so fast, however that they end up needing outside office space to contain the business.

Advertisement: The host can also put ads on their free websites provided to clients thereby playing off the traffic they bring in. The disadvantage to the free site hosting is that most of the sites that use them are small business, or personal users that do not generate enough traffic to generate large incomes from the advertising.

Other Services to Generate Extra Income:

* Search engine optimization: A web hosts clients know they want traffic. They generally do not know how to get it. This is an advantage for an enterprising web host who can create a system for the clients wishing to have a popular website. By offering these techniques a client can gain information on the various search engines, and the host can, for a fee, submit the client’s URL to the searchers such as Yahoo, MSN, Google and any of the hundreds of engines.

* Template creation: Established web hosts can increase their income by providing cheap services to the customer. This income is often more to give the hosting company more exposure. The host offers their customers the ability to purchase one of their special templates in order to create a visually unique and appealing web site, or sells them a membership to one of the big template services and gets a kick-back on that as well.

* Selling domain names: Selling domain names to customers can is a great way to earn extra money. Web hosts who do not offer this are missing out on a large portion of their possible income. Registration for the transfer of a domain name, as well as the original registration of the name can definitely make money for a web host. There are many private domain name companies to work with to provide this service.

* Site Builder Wizards: If a host has the ability to provide such additional help with site building techniques they are a step ahead in both ways to make extra money, and ways to lure potential clients in. Everyone wants a website today, but the knowledge of how to create one from scratch is still and elusive ability. People congregate to places that offer this type of assistant making it easy for them to create their own sites. Clients have high expectations now though, so it needs to be able to provide a full range of features.

Avoid Overselling:

No matter what method is adopted for web hosting money making, it has to be remembered that there is no overselling. This is such a situation where a web host offers space to large number of clients but ultimately fails to retain the service. Too many clients using limited space can be a dangerous situation where there is a high chance for the entire system to crash along with the business of the web hosts. Too many web hosts cannot simply sustain simultaneously in a single server. The bandwidth and the space of the server have to be judged beforehand. The reputation of a hosting company depends on these factors to a large extent.

Web hosting is a reputable and profitable adventure in making money online. The type of service you will be able to provide relies on the extent of your knowledge and training almost as much as it does the equipment you have access to. It takes time to learn all of the intricate details and is best to start small and allow your business to grow as your knowledge does.

How to Choose a VPS Host ?

by Matt Hedges

VPS, or Virtual Private Server, means hosting of different entities for various customers, but all in one server. It enables the service provider to make a partition of a single server into many virtual servers. The customers would then share the server as a whole, which includes both the connection and the hardware. They would actually enjoy the same benefits as they would get in case of dedicated hosting like a file system and a private operating system, which gives them the freedom of safe access. So this kind of a configuration means a combination of a dedicated and a shared hosting. In all, an enhanced performance with privacy will accrue to the company at a much lower cost than it would have to pay for dedicated hosting.

Customers would get certain controlling features as well, like the administrative tasks of changing the configuration of the server, installation of software, rebooting the server, etc. This kind of an account is good for those customers who invariably need safety and accessibility more than anything else. So you may very well opt for VPS hosting if you want to switch over from a shared hosting to a dedicated one, without having the need to increase the costs for the purpose. Some service providers offer this service for a cheap cost of $10 a month, so investing in a VPS hosting environment is a very good idea for many online business owners. Given that the operating system and the file system are unique for every customer, the users can get a good portion of the server when you talk about CPU, network and the disk input and output.

If you are planning to resell the hosting, you will have a greater degree of control on those services which you can offer, so it would give you a competitive edge over the competitors. For those web developers who are planning to develop a social networking site or a blog full of functions, VPS hosting would be the idle choice to go for. Even for those webmasters who find it comfortable managing a shared hosting and wish to upgrade their technical know-how on server management, but do not wish to expose themselves to a dedicated server in totality, VPS hosting is a good option. The webmasters would be enabled to install some custom applications or even change modules for their servers. Besides, they would enjoy full security over all the websites under their management, because every single VPS environment is run by a unique software for its hosting, since they have their unique resources as well, intrusion possibilities are widely reduced.

An initial and the entry level web hosting plan endows you with things like PHP/MySQL, etc., having limited disk space on a shared server. Whereas, co-location puts the hardware in your grip and you simply have to rent an Internet connection and a rack space from data center. VPS hosting stands between these two like a connector. VPS option is inexpensive and perfect if you can’t afford a co-location web hosting plan but want to avail a shared hosting.

As for the lower expenses, a dedicated web hosting plan is at least better than co-locating. Let it put in this manner that this is priced bearing in mind the competitive market. A dedicated host endows you with a dedicated server. Its cost is not as low as a VPS web hosting plan but it is well within your reach. As far as its scheme is concerned, you do get the server from the host company but you don’t need to hire the rack space for the server like you need to do in co-location.

Some of the advantages of a VPS web hosting plan are listed below:

It endows you with a root access and with the aid of this; you can accomplish the installation and configuration of any program.

Provides features which enables hosting of multiple sites by using virtual hosts that are provided by Apache.

You get many other services as well, like an FTP server, a mail server, and any server that you may need

These servers can be used for storing files, as backup, or as anything as it might suit you

Certain disadvantages accrue to the VPS web hosting plans as well, which are mentioned below:

As a VPS web host allows you to fully control the server, you become primarily responsible for anything that you do. Installation, security, maintenance you become responsible for all your actions. So if you don’t have enough expertise on looking after a Linux Server, this may pose a big problem.

The VPS web hosting enables you to work with the entire server; however you have to share hardware with the other users of the same host. This will pose as a problem for you if your work requires use of a bulk of the RAM since you are allotted only a segment of it. Therefore if it does not suffice then it may pose as a great disadvantage for you in which case switching over to a co-location or dedicated server would be a wise choice.

How does it work?

This is truly a complicated process. Actually, an incorporation of technologies like Virtual PC by Microsoft, the User Mode Linux by Open Source, XEN and some others do make the process of VPS possible. The combination of XEN (receiving rave reviews from the media) with the approaching Linux distribution seems to be possible. This is going to be of paramount significance for the web developers endowing them with more freedom at lower cost.

You may ask what you will get if you use a VPS account. Firstly, you will get the access to core areas of your server. As said earlier, if you are good at working on a Linux server, you can have full access and control over everything that you wish to do. But since it gives you the liberty of unlimited control, you will be liable for anything that you do. So if you are not comfortable with Linux, VPS is not meant for you.

Well, a free lowing liberty and immense control don’t mean that you need to build the whole operating system from the very outset. They generally provide disk images to choose from and they also do possess a good many number of distribution in the default configurations. Configuration on the VPS is done within a twinkling of an eye provided you select the disk image. Once the account is ready, you are endowed with the root access via SSH letting you do anything.

VPS prices start from a monthly amount of $20 on the lower side, to up to $100 on the higher side. However, don’t take price as an indication of quality. If you are not fully aware of how the VPS web host functions, you can start off with the lower end which gives you 64MB RAM and a 2GB disk space. You can expand your base from there on. You can go for the higher price band if you have great ideas but little budget to commence with your business.
