Personal Development Plans and NLP Techniques
Creating your own tailored personal development plan is a big step towards setting and achieving your goals, but without the right approach it can seem a daunting and even impossible task. But with the right tools, all it takes is literally 15 minutes a day. NLP is one of the many tools at your disposal that can help you in building confidence to go after your goals with passion and determination.
It may seem a strange way of doing things, but a good life coach will always ask you questions about the areas you are trying to improve. Like “Why do you think that everything in your life is not going as well as you would like it to?”, or “Why do you think other people seem to find it easier to get what they want in life?”
The way I see it is this - the people who are able to achieve their goals and ambitions in life, with relative ease are much less inhibited, and even totally un-inhibited.
Successful people still experience nerves and feelings of anxiety when they find themselves in positions outside of their comfort zone, but they learnt some time ago, exactly how to manage their behavior and overcome their negative emotions and even eliminate them completely.
Having learned the behaviors they need to emanate success, successful people then practice these empowering behaviors every day. In doing so, they leave no room in their emotional make-up for negative and dis-empowering emotions.
If these people can learn how to not feel nervous and anxious in important situations, so can you.
If these people have learned how to remain calm and relaxed when they get into winning positions in sport, so can you.
If professional speakers can learn how to overcome their fear of public speaking, and present themselves in a manner which leaves their audience wanting more, so can you.
Successful people weren’t always successful - they learnt how to become successful. So if people can learn how to overcome their frustrations and focus on the actions they need to achieve their ultimate goals and ambitions - so can you.
If you’re truly serious about overcoming your inhibitions, and can set aside 10 to 15 minutes each day (or every other day will do), you can learn some very simple NLP techniques that will show you exactly how to take control of your life. You can learn how to turn negative and dysfunctional emotions into positive and empowering behaviour patterns that will take you ever closer to your goals.
NLP - or Neuro Linguistic Programming - in its simplest form is basically a method to help you control your thoughts and reactions in any given situation. When you experience negative emotions, like fear or nerves or anxiety, you are reacting negatively to that situation. NLP provides a mechanism that shows you how to take those negative reactions, and turn them round into positive and functional reactions that will start to empower you.
There are two very simple exercises that you can perform to help get started using these NLP techniques to create your personal development plan:
1. First of all, you need to start to take notice (or become aware) of the things that are causing you to feel bad. If a particular situation of place causes you to feel nervous or anxious, simply make a note of it. The best plan is to carry a little notebook around with you so that you can take notes whenever you feel this way.
You can’t start to break through your limiting emotions and beliefs until you fully understand what they are. This exercise helps you identify exactly what those negative behaviour patterns are.
2. Exercise 2 is even easier. Simply make a list of all the negative behaviors and feelings that you want to eliminate from your life. Write them all down - every last one. This list is a work-in-progress - keep adding to it every time you think of or experience another emotion you want to rid yourself of. At the same time, make a note of exactly how you would like to feel most of the time. Again, write it down and describe how you feel and what it means to you to feel that way.
These aren’t big exercises, but it’s important that you take time to complete them fully. The more you put into creating them, the more you’ll get out of the process when you start to create your personal development plan for building your future.
