Online Backup Is Your Best Bet

by Dan Miller

You have to practice a data backup routine in order to ensure a high availability of your data. One of the simplest options is to save your data in an external hard drive or a pen drive. To be effective, you have to remember to take a backup every few days. This is always not possible as we are busy with our work.

To make the job of backing up the data easier for us there are many backup software packages that are available in the market. The backup software works by creating a partition in your hard disk that is protected from inconsistencies. You have the option of scheduling a backup routine or you can manually create a backup of your data as and when required.

Another option is signing up at an online backup web site. If you sign up for this service from a web based provider, you are saved of the hassle of investing in an expensive software package for saving your data. The online backup service providers also ensure that the data that you upload is free from computer viruses.

The data that you upload to the online backup service provider is stored securely in multiple servers. This ensures that your data is always safe and available whenever you need it. Of all the backup options discussed here, remote data backup with an online provider is the best if you want to save money and be free from the bother of managing and securing your data.

How to Write Down and Remember Everything Your Teacher Says

by Dr Marc R. Dussault

As a student, I can almost bet at one time or another you have had the experience of taking reams of notes, only to find you’ve left something important out or simply cannot find it in your notes later. Fortunately for you, there are some helpful tips in this article to help you remember everything your teacher says. Read on for some techniques sure to increase your ability to absorb and recall massive amounts of information, easily and effortlessly.

Use Coloured Pens and Pencils

Take out some of your notes right now. What is the same throughout all of them? The pen and pencil colour. When something is one dimensional like this on an entire page, it is hard to take away certain notes from each area. Instead, try using coloured pens and pencils with which to take notes. Remember, make this a routine and positive results will soon follow.

The majority of people have an easier time locating, learning and recalling information when they have visual cues. Using varied colors in your notes gives you a visual cue which can help you remember or at least find important facts in your notes. Experiment with these - some people find some colors more helpful than others. Different colors for different kinds of notes can also be useful.

I like to write the body of my text in a colour other than blue, usually black, with non-black highlights. I always correct it in red if necessary. This is due to the extreme contrast that black and red represent to one another. You’ll end up being able to find it much easier on your pages cluttered with notes.

Underline and ACCENTUATE Key Points

This is very important when taking notes. Be creative and explore different variations. Multi-stroke, underlining, boxes, circles, and shadows are effective in drawing attention to increasingly important items or definitions. Just be sure not to overdue it or these styles will be ineffective.

Include Charts, Figures and Graphs

Sometimes things just can’t be communicated clearly using only words. Relationships, timelines, causality and exchanges are difficult to explain in writing. However, they are easy to illustrate even for the artistically challenged like me! These diagrams should include colours and other graphical representations such as bullets, arrows, shading and text of different colours.

Summarize Notes On Large Paper

For some reason, large sized paper works really well for note taking. You can get continuous computer paper in boxes of 5,000 sheets for as little as $25, making this a great investment - I’ve been using the same box for two years now! You can even do large diagrams and charts and simply fold them up for easy portability.

The advantage of large sheets like these is being able to fit your notes from a lecture onto one sheet of paper. Alternatively, the sheets can be divided by subject or concept. One or the other strategy may be better, depending on the course.

To illustrate, I had a course last year where I was able to place my notes from lectures on a single page (one page per lecture). I could fit notes for 17 textbook chapters and thirty articles on these pages as well. This let me study from 12 pages instead of a thousand - quite a time saver, and MUCH more effective.

Taking notes can actually be fun. The best part is, when you take notes using these strategies, you can feel yourself remembering the information! Try it yourself - you’ll find your confidence in your academic abilities grows by leaps and bounds and your grades are sure to reflect this.

Be Cost Effective With Desktop Publishing

by Rex Stevenson

Desktop publishing is not all that difficult, but you will need specialized programs to help you. With desktop publishing software, you can create your own business cards, flyers, brochures, or newsletters. There are programs that let you put it all together easily like Microsoft publisher.

Desktop publishing software is a great choice in all your printing projects because it can help you save money. Many software programs are easy enough to use, and are great for simple projects. They can help you make your own letterhead, or business cards. Some projects require a bit more of a professional appearance but there is also desktop publishing software that can help in these situations too. You may need to learn to use them but it is still worth it. It is much easier for your printer to understand your idea when you give them a finished design. Even if you only end up using the desktop publishing software for your newsletter, you still save a lot of money.

But when you do desktop publishing you need to take many factors into account. Things that you would not normally have to think of if you were publishing online. You need to think about the paper you use, the colors, the ink, and even your image resolution.

If you want to give your business a really professional image then you might want to learn to use a more advanced desktop publishing program, but these programs can be difficult to use, and you may need to do a bit of learning. Programs like PageMaker, QuarkXPress, AdobeInDesign, and PageMaker can be a little hard to use.

When you need a printing project professionally done, and you just don’t have the time to learn how to use one of these programs, then you need to either find a freelancer or a student who can help you get your printing project finished. There are many freelancers that are very proficient at these programs and don’t charge much. You could check on one of several freelance sites to find someone who knows how to use desktop publishing programs.

When you do use another person to do your desktop publishing projects, don’t expect him to read your mind. You need to get all your data together that will explain what your goals are. Get your data and your images together. Give precise instructions of what you want to achieve with your publications. Explain who your readers are and what you want from them.

Be specific, and explain what you sell and the type of images and even the type of graphics, and the colors that you want in your project. Even get the copy ready for this project. Make sure you even have captions for your images, if you have them. The professional you choose will not be able to guess your purpose. So unless you want to learn how to use the desktop publishing software, you need to rely on a professional and you need to express what your needs are.

Finally make sure you proof read all of the publication before printing it. No matter what kind of printing you plan on doing, whether you plan on using a laser printer, a regular color printer, or professionally printing. You need to make sure everything is the way you want it, including the content before printing it in any form, because printing costs money. You don’t want to reprint two hundred copies because there was a word missing!
